Choosing between a 12-inch and 28-inch My First Teddy? We break down the trade-offs to help you pick the right size for your baby's first bear.
Quick answer
For a baby's first cuddly companion, the 12-inch My First Teddy is the versatile choice—easy for little arms to hug and simple to carry. Choose the 28-inch version when you want a statement piece for the nursery or a larger snuggle buddy for older toddlers.
Why size matters for a baby's first teddy
The right teddy bear size depends on how your baby will interact with it. Newborns and young infants are mostly observers—they enjoy looking at a soft, colorful bear placed nearby. As they grow, they start reaching, grabbing, and eventually hugging. A 12-inch bear fits those early motor skills perfectly, while a 28-inch bear becomes more of a floor companion or decor piece.
Think about where the teddy will live. A 12-inch bear fits easily in a crib corner, a stroller, or a diaper bag for outings. A 28-inch bear is too large for travel but makes a cozy addition to a reading nook or a nursery chair. Consider your daily routines and how much space you have.
Trade-offs: portability vs. presence
The 12-inch My First Teddy is lightweight and portable. It's easy for a toddler to carry around, and it won't overwhelm a small child's arms. On the downside, it's less impressive as a room decoration and might get lost among larger plush toys.
The 28-inch My First Teddy is a substantial presence. It can serve as a soft pillow for leaning on, and it makes a memorable baby shower gift. However, it's heavy and bulky—not something you'll toss in a stroller. It also requires more cleaning effort if it gets dirty.
Color choice: pink or blue?
Both sizes come in pink and blue options, so you can match the teddy to your nursery theme or personal preference. The gentle colors are designed to be soothing for babies, and the soft plush material is made to withstand lots of love. Choose the color that fits your space—there's no wrong answer.
Decision rules for choosing the right size
- For a newborn or young infant (0-6 months): Choose the 12-inch teddy. It's small enough to place safely in a crib (without loose items) and easy for a parent to hold up for visual stimulation. Always follow safe sleep guidelines—no loose items in the crib for babies under 12 months.
- For a toddler who wants to carry a teddy: Pick the 12-inch version. It's lightweight and fits in little arms, making it the ideal companion for walks, car rides, or nap time.
- For a nursery decoration or floor play: Go with the 28-inch teddy. It makes a soft, huggable statement piece and can serve as a comfortable prop for tummy time or reading sessions. If you want a gift that doubles as decor, the 28-inch is more impressive.
