Een praktische, stapsgewijze handleiding om pluchen knuffels veilig met de hand te wassen, geurtjes aan te pakken en verklitte vacht te herstellen zonder naden of vulling te beschadigen.

Quick answer

Hand wash most stuffed animals in cool water with a gentle detergent, then air-dry them fully before brushing the fur back into place. Spot-clean electronics, music boxes, or glued-on parts instead of soaking them. For routine freshening, a surface wipe and a short airing-out often beat a full bath.

Check the toy before it gets wet

Look for loose seams, exposed stuffing, battery packs, sound boxes, glued-on eyes, or stiffened glue around accessories. Any of those change the plan: spot-clean around them or skip water entirely. If the care label is missing, treat the toy as hand-wash only and test a hidden area first.

Pick the right cleaning method for the mess

Surface grime, dust, and light odors usually come out with a damp cloth and a little gentle soap. Sticky spills, pet accidents, and heavy body oils need a full hand wash. Smoke or musty smells may need two or three short soaks with thorough drying in between, not one long soak.

Dry and brush to bring the fur back

Squeeze, do not wring. Roll the toy in a clean towel to pull out excess water, then reshape it by hand and air-dry away from direct heat. Once it is completely dry, fluff the fur with a soft brush or your fingertips. Matted areas often loosen with a little finger-combing while the toy is still slightly damp, then again when fully dry.

Step-by-step stuffed animal cleaning and restoration

  1. 1. Inspect and test: Check seams, stuffing, batteries, and glued parts. Test a hidden spot with your cleaning solution. If the toy has a sound box or glued eyes, switch to spot cleaning.
  2. 2. Pre-treat spots: Dab stains with a tiny amount of gentle detergent and cool water using a soft cloth. Work from the outside of the stain inward. Do not rub hard, which can push the stain deeper or roughen the fur.
  3. 3. Hand wash in cool water: Fill a basin with cool water and a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the toy and gently squeeze the suds through the fabric for a minute or two. Avoid hot water, bleach, and fabric softener, which can break down fibers or leave residue.
  4. 4. Rinse until the water runs clear: Drain and refill with cool water, squeezing gently until no suds remain. Leftover soap attracts dirt and can make the plush feel stiff.
  5. 5. Remove excess water: Squeeze the toy gently, then roll it in a clean dry towel and press down. Never wring or twist, which can distort the shape and stress seams.
  6. 6. Air-dry and reshape: Lay the toy flat or hang it in a well-ventilated spot away from direct sun and heat. Reshape it by hand while damp. A fan on low speed can speed drying without adding heat.
  7. 7. Brush and fluff: Once completely dry, brush the fur with a soft brush or your fingers. For matted areas, work small sections loose with your fingertips. If fur still looks matted, a second gentle wash and brush may help, but avoid repeated soaking.

Plush care examples from Aurora

  • Aurora® - Palm Pals™ - 5" Rocco Rockhopper Penguin™: Rocco Rockhopper Penguin is a 5-inch Palm Pals plush penguin in black, part of the Arctic and birds themes, suitable for all ages. Smaller plush like this fit in a basin or mesh bag for hand washing and dry faster than larger toys.
  • Aurora® - Peanuts® - 11" Easter Snoopy With Egg: The 11-inch Easter Snoopy With Egg is part of the Peanuts plush collection by Aurora. Larger plush with attached accessories needs extra care around the egg and any decorative details during washing and drying.
  • Aurora® - Mini Flopsie™ - 8" Maynard™: Maynard is an 8-inch Mini Flopsie plush from Aurora's Mini Flopsie collection. A mid-size plush like this is a good candidate for gentle hand washing when it has absorbed everyday oils or odors.

If the toy has a sound box, glued-on parts, or a fragile surface, spot cleaning is the safer choice. When in doubt, test a hidden area first and dry completely before handing it back.
